Running Record Mini Lesson

Candidate’s Name: Erika Garcia
Grade Level: 6th grade
Title of the lesson: Comprehension & fluency
Length of the lesson: 30 minutes


Central focus – Students will focus on reading short stories to read out loud with fluency and being able to comprehend and answer questions after. Students will find new ways to take notes while reading and helping them find new techniques to use in the future.
Knowledge of students –
Students will know how to make inferences and write about the text and answer questions in regards to reading the story. This will help students improve their comprehension.

Key Questions:
What part of the story was hard to understand?
What words are difficult to answer in the story?
How do we take notes while reading to refer back to a part you did not understand ?

Common Core State Standards
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.

Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.

Support literacy development through language
This lesson would help support writing, comprehension and help fluency.

Vocabulary
● describe, explain, interpret, predict, question, retell, summarize and find evidence.
Sentence Level
     Sentence structure, transitions/connectives, complex verb tenses
Discourse
     Student will work on Text structure and having a discussion about what they have read.
Learning objectives

1. Students will be able to comprehend what they read and express in discussion.
2.  Student will be able to write in complete sentences.
3. Student will be able to improve their reading with fluency
Formal and informal assessment 
·      Were students able to comprehend the short story?
·      Were students able to write a response to the questions asked?
·      Were students able to read with fluency and ask questions while reading?
Instructional procedure:

1.     Read a short story twice to show an example of fluency, how to take notes and express discussion after the story.
2.     Have student read out loud, stop at the end of each paragraph to comprehend what they just read.
3.     Have student highlight words they do not understand.
4.     Review story with student and ask questions.
5.     Have student write out full sentences, proper grammar and correct vocabulary.
Accommodations:
Help student writing if he is having trouble.

Reflection
·      Was student able to write out complete sentence with proper sentence structure?
·      Is student more comfortable reading out loud with fluency?
·      Does student catch and correct their errors while reading?
